The L.A.C. was originally founded in 1922. In the period between the two world wars 1918 - 1939 L.A.C was a club consisting mainly of track athletes. Many young athletes were sponsored to the bigger events in Pietermarizburg and Durban mainly by Arthur Cresswell. During the period of World War II 1939 - 1945 the Club fell away. In 1946 the club was revived again, still mainly for track and field events. Again the generosity of Arthur Cresswell played a big part, helping athletes to get to the big events in the bigger centres. However it was short lived falling away again in the early fifties.
Then it all happened. One night in the old Country Club in Golf street Dave Gardner declared he would like to run the Comrades Marathon. Dart Bousefield promptly showed him how easy it was by running on the Pub counter. The club was revived again. In 1966 the first Arthur Cresswell Bergville to Ladysmith Marathon was run, a huge entry of 44 started. The scene had changed. L.A.C. had become a road running club. Dave Gardner was elected as the first chairman of the revived club and a time trial was run every Thursday evening round the by - pass.
Over the years the club has grown from strength to strength to become one of the top clubs in the province.
